Epicanthal Folds Surgery?

Epicanthal folds are defined as skin folds of upper eyelid leaning towards inner corner of eye. It is a congenital disease and develops during development of fetus within womb. It is a harmless disease which do not affect other parts of face and body. It normally occurs in korean, japanese and chinese population. Mostly women are found with epicanthic folds as compare to men. Epicanthic folds disappear on its own after 3 to 6 months of gestation period in infants. But if it persist, then there may be a pathological condition leading to epicanthic folds. The treatment options include surgical therapy. The surgical therapy involve various types according to severity and location of epicanthic folds. Mainly epicanthoplasty is performed for correcting epicanthal folds. Epicanthoplasty is a rare surgery performed. It is also risky procedure, because epicanthal folds cover half or almost full of lacrimal canaliculi. Lacrimal canaliculi are the drainage tracts of tears. When epicanthal folds on upper eyelid cover little bit of caruncle, then it is called as mild epicanthal folds and single eyelids. Single eyelids are different from double eyelids. Upper eyelid crease may also present along with epicanthal folds. Simple eyelids can be treated with double eyelid surgery. In epicanthoplasty, medial epicanthal is corrected aesthetically. In asians, epicanthal folds covers the inner corner of eye and is commonly present. It may also occur due to any trauma or injury on head or eye. In epicanthoplasty, the inner most tissues of medial canthus are rearranged to get normal upper eyelid. Tissue from inner side of eye are also rearranged to make it more effective. Palpebral fissure is made wide and reveal medial canthus and palpebral fornix. Epicanthic surgery leaves scar on eye. So physician try his best to make it in a way with less scaring. Doctors or physicians perform epicanthoplasty with a minute cut, that it looks like a normal anatomical scar. Another benefit of epicanthoplasty is, patient can rearrange his canthus according to his desire along with removal of epicanthal folds. Sometimes physician correct any kind of asymmetry present in eye along with epicanthoplasty. Doctors perform double eyelid crease surgery with epicanthoplasty in order to correct both conditions of epicanthal folds and eyelid crease. In epicanthoplasty, general or local anesrhesia are used depending upon the condition. Sedatives are optional. As in outpatients sedatives are not recommended. After correcting eyelids and epicanthal folds by removing excessive tissues of inner most skin of medial canthus. Doctors stich the cuts and these stiches are removed after a week of surgery. Now a days dissolveable stiches are used which dissolves on their own after complete healing. After epicanthoplasty, swelling or bruising may occur but it disappear after 7 to days of surgery. Special care is needed after epicanthoplasty. Patient have to take care of wound to avoid any infections and have to follow doctors instructions about medications prescribed. It is an effective surgical procedure but require special care during surgery because of involvement of sensitive parts of eye.
